 :: The Story

"Blitz!" was Lionel Bart's second musical, following the huge success of "Oliver!". "Blitz!" follows the life of East Enders during the period of the blitz in WWII London. The tale revolves around two families, the Blitzteins and the Lockes.

Mrs Blitztein is a large dominating Jewish lady who has bought up her large family single-handedly by selling pickled herrings in Petticoat Lane, following the death of her much loved husband Jack.

The neighbouring stall holder is Alfred Locke, a cockney widower, who sells fruit. He is an "Old Contemptible" from the first War and he is now an Air Raid Warden.

Mrs Blitztein and Mr Locke have a bickering relationship, which is not helped by the burgeoning affair between Mrs Blitztein's daughter Carol and Mr Locke's son Georgie of which neither approves.

Mrs Blitztein's oldest son and apple of her eye, Harry, is a bit of a Jack the Lad character who deserts the army, runs off with a married woman and gets involved in some shady black market dealings.

While Georgie is away, will Carol remain true or be matched with a good Jewish boy, like Mrs Josephs' son as Mrs Blitztein would like? Will true love win through? Will Harry return from the brink? Will Mrs Blitztein patch up her differences with Mr Locke?
